ABOUT ME
I’m Katherine Shapiro, a movement educator with over 18 years of experience teaching yoga, Pilates, and dance in New York City and the Hamptons.
I was born in Boston and raised in the U.S., France, Belgium, and Denmark. My multicultural upbringing and extensive travels helped shape my belief in the deep connection we all share. That understanding inspires both how I live and how I teach.
My path began with dance and Pilates and deepened through yoga, meditation, and spiritual study. I teach from a place of mindfulness and compassion, blending movement with meaning—especially important in today’s often chaotic world.
In my classes, I offer a personalized, inclusive approach. Whether you’re seeking restorative yoga, gentle movement, or a more active practice, I guide each student with care, creativity, and intelligent sequencing. My goal is to help you feel strong, balanced, and present.
I hold a BFA in Dance from SUNY Purchase and am registered with Yoga Alliance as an E-RYT 500 and YACEP (Continuing Education Provider). My teaching certificates include ISHTA Yoga, Yoga Shanti, and YogaWorks, where I served as a Senior Pilates and Yoga Teacher. I studied and taught at the Original NYC Pilates Studio under the legendary Romana Kryzanowska.
WHAT STUDENTS ARE SAYING
I met Katherine 3 years ago and I am so grateful I did. At that moment I was a 62 year old woman with osteoporosis who was at the end of a long recovery from a shattered patella. I began my pilates sessions tentatively both physically and mentally. Three years later I have never been stronger. Walking the streets of NYC which I love and do daily and for good distances, I feel secure, strong and confident and that is all thanks to Katherine. She is tremendously knowledgeable about women's bodies. She always listens to me and checks in throughout the sessions. She is a wonderful teacher, communicator and collaborator. I have always felt safe in her care which allows me to try things and challenge myself. What good fortune it was to find Katherine and be able to work with her these past few years. Feel so lucky.
